Description

Nsibidi, an ancient writing system from southeastern Nigeria, was used to convey messages about sexuality, gender roles, and social relations. Some symbols explicitly reference relationships and sexual practices that diverged from the heteronormative structures introduced during colonization. These symbols suggest that in many African cultures, including the communities where Nsibidi was used, there was once a more inclusive understanding of sexual and gender diversity.
